Bamboo Earrings
SHIRO / SUSU

SHIRO
Freshly harvested bamboo is naturally green in color. Through a process called aburanuki (oil removal), the bamboo transforms into a soft, ochre hue with a beautiful luster. SHIRO is crafted from this oil-treated shirotake (white bamboo) and left uncoated to highlight its raw expression and natural sheen.
Once dried, bamboo becomes extremely lightweight and produces a soft, pleasant clattering sound with movement.
SUSU
SUSU is made from susudake—bamboo that once formed the ceilings of traditional thatched-roof homes. Over decades, it was gently smoked by the hearth’s rising smoke, giving it a rich, natural amber color.
The earrings are finished by applying two light layers of domestic urushi lacquer, allowing the bamboo’s natural gradation to shine through.
There are three general types of expression: plain, gradation, and goma (freckled). Each piece is uniquely colored by time and smoke—no two are alike.
