These earrings are made from "susu-dake," a type of bamboo. Susu-dake is bamboo that was used under the thatched roofs of old houses, smoked over a long period by the smoke from an irori hearth, giving it a beautiful amber color.

 

The natural gradation of the susu bamboo is preserved, and it is finished with two light coats of domestic lacquer.

 

There are three types available: plain, gradient, and sesame. Each is naturally smoked, so no two are exactly alike.
